Chapter 14. On the Brink of the Owner’s Fury

Since Masha will be accompanying me, I need to upgrade the transport. While the Volga is business class, duchesses are better suited to executive cars — preferably luxury ones with spacious interiors. That’s why I sent Nikita to the rental agency first thing in the morning.

By the time he returns, I’ve already had breakfast at the hotel restaurant.

“Boss, I got us such a sweet ride!” Nikita exclaims, clearly impressed. “It’s amazing! You’ll have duchesses lining up for you!”

“Well, let’s just say I’m not aiming for all of them,” I reply dryly. “In fact, I’m not looking for any. I only need to take Maria Yurievna out, make sure she enjoys herself, and get her home safe and sound. So, what did you get?”

“A Maybach, of course,” Nikita grins. “White.”

“At least it’s not pink,” I say with a smirk.

“They didn’t have one,” he shoots back. I can’t tell if he’s joking or serious. “Oh, boss, this car is next level! Five hundred horses under the hood, premium leather trim, even the steering wheel’s wrapped in leather! That’s what you call a car factory that truly cares about its drivers!”

“It’s Russian-made,” I chuckle, holding back a grin. “We care about everyone. All right, let’s get moving. Have you checked the car for explosives?”

“Of course,” Nikita nods confidently. “It’s clean. We can leave whenever you’re ready.”

“Good. Go get the car ready while I change into something formal.”

Nikita heads off to the underground garage, and I quickly swap into a business suit and a tailored black jacket instead of my usual raincoat. I even put on a tie — my new ‘corporate noose.’ It seems I’ll be wearing this thing a lot now. The image of a corporation owner demands it. Without formal clothes, I look more like a junior athlete with a gymnast’s build — not bad, but my young face still makes me look like I haven’t earned much life experience yet, even if I am a telepath.

Fifteen minutes later, I head down to the garage and spot the rented Maybach right away — a gleaming white behemoth of smooth metal. Soon, I’ll have my own, but it will be black and armored.

The interior of the Maybach feels like a princely living room — spacious, luxurious, and almost intimidating in its opulence. But I adjust quickly, pulling a soda from the mini-bar, lowering the table with a cup holder, and settling in like I belong. Drinking straight from the can, I watch the sights of the capital glide past, enjoying the calm before the storm of my busy schedule.

The Graduate School of Assistants is conveniently located near my hotel, but navigating the narrow, old alleys in our white leviathan proves tricky for Nikita. Still, his masterful driving pulls us through. I’m lucky to have such a capable driver.

In the hall, I’m greeted by a young woman wearing a badge that reads ‘Evdokia.’

“Danila Stepanovich?” she asks with a warm smile. “Anna Vladimirovna is expecting you. Let me show you the way.
